What is Friendly Fraud?


Friendly fraud occurs when a customer makes an online shopping purchase with their own credit card, after receiving the purchased items the customer then requests a chargeback from their payment provider.

The customer complains that he or she has a charge on their card statement which they do not recognise and never ordered any items.

Payment providers such as PayPal, Worldpay, Square, Sagepay, etc are quick to defend their customers and approved the chargeback stating ‘lack of supporting evidence’ as the reason for the chargeback. The chargeback cancels the transaction, the consumer receives a full refund the online shop gets a fine and has also lost the items.

Friendly fraud is not very friendly to merchants we prefer it be called ‘Internet Shoplifting’. Customers use friendly fraud to obtain free items hiding behind the payment providers. Friendly fraud can come in two flavours deliberate and accidental. Deliberate friendly fraud is on the increase, accidental friendly fraud is quickly resolved in communication with the customer.
